December Church Newsletter Ideas: A Content Plan for 2026

· LanternLetter Co.

December is the one month when almost everyone reads the church newsletter, because they need the Christmas schedule. It is also the month with the most to fit in. This guide is a content plan for one issue: what to cover, in what order, and when to send it. For the general monthly structure behind it, see our church newsletter guide. Check every date against your own church calendar.

December 2026 dates to cover

  • Advent Sundays: November 29 and December 6, 13 and 20, 2026
  • Giving Tuesday: December 1, if your church takes part
  • The longest night of the year: Monday, December 21, a date some churches use for a Blue Christmas or Longest Night service
  • Christmas Eve: Thursday, December 24
  • Christmas Day: Friday, December 25
  • The Sunday after Christmas: December 27, the last Sunday of 2026
  • New Year's Eve: Thursday, December 31, also the last day for 2026 gifts
  • Epiphany: Wednesday, January 6, 2027

When to send it

Because Advent begins on November 29, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, a December issue that arrives on December 1 is already late for the first week. Two options work well:

  • One issue sent or handed out on Sunday, November 22, covering everything from Advent to New Year.
  • Two shorter issues: an Advent issue on November 22, and a short Christmas schedule email around December 14 that people can forward to family.

If your office closes for Thanksgiving, plan to finish the issue by Tuesday, November 24 at the latest.

Section-by-section content plan

  1. The Christmas schedule, at the top. Every service from Christmas Eve to New Year in one box, with day, date, time and location. This is the section people screenshot, so keep it plain.
  2. A short pastor's note on the Advent theme or series, under 200 words.
  3. Advent week by week: the theme or candle for each Sunday, and anything special such as a children's program or a choir Sunday. Our Advent wreath readings page lists common themes.
  4. Ways to serve and give: the gift drive, food pantry or partner charity, with item lists, drop-off places and deadlines.
  5. Invite a friend: a ready-to-forward invitation to Christmas Eve, with the web address. Match it to your Christmas Eve graphic.
  6. Year-end giving: the December 31 deadline, how each way of giving is dated, and when statements will arrive. Our year-end giving insert guide has wording you can reuse.
  7. Care and support: a gentle note for people who find the season hard, any Blue Christmas service, and how to reach a pastor.
  8. Office hours and closures: the days the office is closed between Christmas and New Year, and who to call in an emergency.
  9. Looking ahead: January dates such as Epiphany and any new-year groups. See our Epiphany bulletin guide.

Content ideas that work in December

  • A “Christmas at a glance” half page that families can put on the fridge.
  • A simple Advent at home idea, such as a weekly candle and reading at the dinner table, with the references printed.
  • A thank-you to volunteers who make December possible, kept general so nobody is left out.
  • A year in review told through a few real moments, such as a baptism or a new ministry, rather than statistics.
  • A what to expect on Christmas Eve box for guests: parking, children, how long the service lasts, and the candle-lighting.
  • A quiet note about the Blue Christmas or Longest Night service, for people who are grieving.

Print and email tips for December

  • Put the Christmas schedule in the email preview text and in the first screen, not below the pastor's note.
  • Use the same cover art as your Advent bulletin so the season looks consistent (see our Advent bulletin guide).
  • Print a few large-print copies for people who don't read email; our large-print guide has sizes.
  • Repeat the Christmas schedule word for word in the bulletin from December 13 onward. Our Christmas bulletin ideas cover what else to include.
  • Keep a four-page limit for print. If it doesn't fit, move it to January.

December newsletter checklist

  1. By November 13: confirm all Christmas and New Year service times, office closures and the year-end giving dates.
  2. By November 18: collect the pastor's note, ministry updates and drive details.
  3. By November 22: send or hand out the issue.
  4. Around December 14: send the short Christmas schedule email.
  5. December 27: a short thank-you and New Year note in the bulletin, and start the January issue.

Frequently asked questions

What should go in a December church newsletter?

The full Christmas service schedule at the top, a short pastor's note, Advent week by week, ways to serve and give, a forwardable Christmas Eve invitation, year-end giving dates, care for people who find the season hard, office closures and a look ahead to January.

When should a church send the December newsletter in 2026?

Advent begins on November 29, 2026, so send it by Sunday, November 22. Many churches add a short Christmas schedule email around December 14.

What are the key church dates in December 2026?

Advent Sundays on December 6, 13 and 20 (after November 29), Christmas Eve on Thursday, December 24, Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, the last Sunday of the year on December 27, and New Year's Eve on Thursday, December 31.

Yes, once and clearly: the December 31 deadline, how online gifts and mailed checks are dated, and when giving statements will be sent. Confirm the details with your treasurer.
