How to Write a Church Newsletter People Actually Read
· LanternLetter Co.
A church newsletter keeps the congregation connected between Sundays. The ones people read tend to be short, regular and easy to scan.
A simple monthly structure
- A note from the pastor of a few paragraphs
- The month at a glance: a calendar of services and events
- Two or three feature stories: a ministry, a mission trip, a new member
- Volunteer and giving needs with one clear next step each
- Celebrations and prayer concerns (with consent)
- Contact details, office hours and website
Print, email or both?
Many congregations include people who prefer paper and people who prefer email. A common approach is one design exported two ways: a print-ready PDF for the welcome table and mailing, and an email version or PDF link for everyone else. Keep the content identical so the office maintains one source.
Tips to keep it manageable
- Set a firm monthly deadline for submissions.
- Use a reusable template with fixed sections.
- Ask ministry leaders for a sentence or two and a photo rather than long articles.
- Reuse bulletin announcements instead of rewriting them (see bulletin ideas).
- Match seasonal issues to your bulletin artwork, for example in Advent and Lent.
- Turn each feature into a social media graphic.
Our December newsletter and flyer designs are in the sample styles, and the done-for-you plan covers monthly newsletters. For December issues, see our Christmas bulletin ideas.
