Thanksgiving Church Bulletin Ideas and Wording for November 2026

· LanternLetter Co.

November is a short month for a church office. In 2026 the calendar is especially tight: Christ the King Sunday, Thanksgiving and the First Sunday of Advent all fall within eight days. This guide covers the November dates, what a Thanksgiving bulletin usually needs, wording you can adapt, Scripture references, design ideas and a checklist, so the Advent bulletin is finished before the office closes for the holiday. Traditions differ, so check every date and reading against your own church calendar.

November 2026 dates at a glance

  • All Saints Day: Sunday, November 1, 2026. Because it falls on a Sunday this year, many churches will hold their All Saints remembrance that morning. All Souls Day is Monday, November 2.
  • Sundays in Ordinary Time: November 8 and 15
  • Christ the King (Reign of Christ Sunday in many Protestant churches): Sunday, November 22, 2026. It is the last Sunday of the church year, and in 2026 it is also the Sunday before Thanksgiving.
  • Thanksgiving Eve services: often Wednesday, November 25
  • Thanksgiving Day (United States): Thursday, November 26, 2026. Canadian Thanksgiving was Monday, October 12.
  • First Sunday of Advent: November 29, 2026, the Sunday right after Thanksgiving
  • Giving Tuesday: December 1, 2026

The practical result: the November 22 bulletin has to carry the Thanksgiving week schedule and an Advent preview, and the November 29 bulletin has to be proofed and printed before Thanksgiving if your office closes Thursday and Friday.

What a Thanksgiving bulletin usually needs

  • The Thanksgiving week schedule: any Thanksgiving Eve or Thanksgiving Day service, community meals, and changes to midweek groups. This is the announcement people miss most, so print it on November 15 and 22.
  • Office closure dates, and who to call for pastoral emergencies while the office is closed.
  • A short welcome that is warm toward visitors and family members home for the holiday.
  • One gratitude prompt for the service or the week (examples below).
  • Food drive or meal details: a short list of the items you actually need, the drop-off deadline and where to leave them.
  • An Advent preview: the date of the First Sunday of Advent, any Advent series or wreath-making event, and Christmas Eve service times if you have them.
  • A thank-you to volunteers for the year, kept general so nobody is left off a list.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving: Christ the King

In churches that follow the Revised Common Lectionary, 2026 is Year A, and the readings for Christ the King are Ezekiel 34:11–16, 20–24; Psalm 100 (or Psalm 95:1–7a); Ephesians 1:15–23; and Matthew 25:31–46. Catholic parishes use a different set of readings, also ending with Matthew 25:31–46. Psalm 100 is a natural bridge to Thanksgiving, and Matthew 25 (“I was hungry and you gave me food”) pairs well with a food drive announcement. White or gold is the traditional color for this Sunday in many churches, so a gold accent can carry from the cover into the Thanksgiving week insert.

Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day services

  • The Revised Common Lectionary readings for Thanksgiving Day in Year A are Deuteronomy 8:7–18; Psalm 65; 2 Corinthians 9:6–15; and Luke 17:11–19 (the ten healed, and the one who returned to give thanks).
  • Community and ecumenical services bring together people from several churches. Print the words to everything the congregation says or sings, name the host church and the participating congregations, and say where the offering goes.
  • Well-known Thanksgiving hymns such as “Now Thank We All Our God” and “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” have older public-domain texts, but newer translations and arrangements may still be under copyright, so check before printing words.
  • Keep the program to a single folded sheet if you can. A shorter service usually needs a shorter program.

Wording you can adapt

Swap in your own details. Short and specific works better than clever.

  • Welcome: “Welcome, especially if you are home for the holiday or visiting with family. We are glad you are here, and we would love to meet you after the service.”
  • Gratitude prompt: “Before you leave today, write one thing you are thankful for on the card in the pew and drop it in the basket at the door. We will read some of them aloud on Thanksgiving Eve, without names.”
  • For people who are grieving: “For some of us, this is the first Thanksgiving with an empty chair. If the holidays are hard this year, you are not alone, and our pastors would be glad to talk with you.”
  • Food drive: “Thanksgiving food drive: we still need canned vegetables, boxed stuffing and cooking oil. Please bring items to the welcome table by Sunday, November 22. Everything goes to [partner] for delivery before Thanksgiving.”
  • Schedule change: “No Wednesday Bible study on November 25. Join us instead for Thanksgiving Eve worship at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary.”
  • Office closure: “The church office is closed Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27. For a pastoral emergency, call [number].”
  • Advent preview: “Advent begins next Sunday, November 29. Pick up an Advent devotional at the welcome table, and save the date for Christmas Eve worship on Thursday, December 24.”

For the general formula behind these, see our announcement wording guide.

Scripture for a Thanksgiving bulletin cover

A short verse works best on a cover. Common choices include Psalm 100:4, Psalm 107:1, Psalm 136:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, Colossians 3:15–17 and 2 Corinthians 9:15. Print the reference with the verse, and use your church's usual translation. Many modern translations allow limited quotation in church bulletins under their own permission rules, while the King James Version is in the public domain in the United States.

Design ideas

  • Harvest colors such as gold, rust and deep green suit November, and they sit well beside the white or gold of Christ the King.
  • Choose simple wheat, leaves or a table setting over cartoon turkeys and pumpkins, which can feel out of place beside a liturgy.
  • Keep your normal bulletin layout and change only the cover and accent color. Advent starts the next Sunday, and a full redesign for one week is rarely worth it.
  • A half-page insert for the Thanksgiving week schedule and food drive keeps the main bulletin clean.
  • Match your November newsletter and social media graphics to the same cover.

November checklist

  1. By November 1: confirm Thanksgiving week services, any community service host, and office closure days.
  2. By November 8: choose the Thanksgiving cover and confirm food drive items and the drop-off deadline.
  3. November 15 and 22: print the Thanksgiving week schedule in the bulletin, newsletter and social posts.
  4. By November 20: finalize the Advent cover and the First Sunday of Advent order of worship (see our Advent bulletin guide and Advent wreath readings).
  5. By Tuesday, November 24: print the Thanksgiving Eve program and the November 29 bulletin before the office closes.
  6. After Thanksgiving: start the year-end giving reminders (see our year-end giving bulletin insert guide) and the Christmas bulletin plan.

Frequently asked questions

When is Thanksgiving 2026, and when does Advent start?

In the United States, Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. The First Sunday of Advent is the Sunday right after it, November 29, 2026, so most churches need the Advent bulletin finished before the holiday.

What Scripture is good for a Thanksgiving church bulletin?

Short verses work best on a cover. Common choices are Psalm 100:4, Psalm 107:1, Psalm 136:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Colossians 3:15-17 and 2 Corinthians 9:15. Use your church's usual translation and print the reference.

What should a Thanksgiving church bulletin include?

The Thanksgiving week service schedule, office closure dates, a short welcome for visitors, one gratitude prompt, food drive details with a deadline, an Advent preview and a general thank-you to volunteers.

Is Christ the King Sunday the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2026?

Yes. In 2026, Christ the King (also called Reign of Christ Sunday) is November 22, the Sunday before Thanksgiving and the last Sunday before Advent. The two do not always line up this way, so check the dates each year.

How early should we print the bulletin for the Sunday after Thanksgiving?

If your office closes on Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after, plan to proof and print the First Sunday of Advent bulletin by Tuesday, November 24, 2026.
